The map covers Great Britain and integrates geology and soil characteristics at a scale of 1:50 000 (visible at higher zoom levels), with a 1km resolution version available for regional overview.

The mySOIL smartphone app is a joint project from the BGS and CEH seeking to promote the distribution of freely available data through smartphone and tablet technologies. The project has developed applications that run on the popular Android and iOS platforms. Datasets that are available to view vie the apps are derived from the BGS Parent material map, CEH Landcover Map, CEH Countryside Survey, UK Meteorological Office and European Commission Joint Research Centre. mySoil lets you take a soil properties map of Britain with you wherever you go, helping you learn about the soil beneath your feet. The project has also developed a citizen science role for the apps, enabling users to upload their own observations about soils in their area. The mySOIL project has contributed several data layers to the UK Soil Observatory Portal.

European Soil Bureau description of Parent Material Th emySoil app uses the European Soil Bureau description of parent materials as its primary map backdrop. The ESB code can be used to identify each Parent Material type. The descriptions are taken from the Georeferenced Soil Database for Europe: Manual of Procedures Version 1.1. Each Parent Material type has been allocated to one (or more) ESB code on the basis of lithology, mode of origin or bulk chemistry. The following broad ESB categories are represented by the geology of Great Britain.
